Call to support older people in situations of dependency through technology

The Social Rights Area of Barcelona City Council and the Commissioner for Technology and Digital Innovation are launching the Social Challenge: “How can we effectively support older people in situations of dependency within the framework of the Social Superblocks?” to help older people at risk of social exclusion and dependency.

The purpose of the call is based on the increase in demand for social services due to the ageing of the population, together with the foreseeable reduction in future pensions and the rise in housing prices, which make it necessary to rethink the structures and distribution of these services, as well as to find complementary or alternative models to residential centres.

The City Council’s response is to divide Barcelona into around 300 Social Superblocks of approximately 6,000 inhabitants each in order to provide high-quality local services to older people and, in a second phase, extend the model to other aspects essential to the community’s well-being, such as childcare, culture and education, and new ways of addressing access to housing. In these Social Superblocks, people will age in homes adapted to their functional and space requirements under a participatory and local governance system; moreover, everyone will receive the same services regardless of income level.

Through this form, proposed solutions to the challenge can be submitted and the completed and signed Responsible Declaration document attached (it can be downloaded at the end of the form).
