Membrane Technologies for Water Treatment: From Fundamentals and Lab Practice to Full-Scale Implementation

31th of August to the 4 th of September 2026

The EMS Summer School 2026 will take place at the University of Girona (Spain) and is organized under the umbrella of the Spanish Research Network on Membrane Science and Technology for Water Treatment (MEMBRANET). This network, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU) through the State Research Agency (AEI), is coordinated by the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and brings together 11 research groups from 7 universities and 3 research centers across Spain.

The UdG–LEQUIA team has solid experience in hosting international training activities, having successfully organized the 2023 Summer School on Membranes for Water Processes within the BIP Erasmus+ Programme.

Course Objectives

This Summer School is aimed at postgraduate students and early career professionals seeking advanced training in membrane science and membrane-based water treatment processes. The program offers a strong scientific foundation in membrane engineering, with a special focus on key filtration processes—including microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis—combined with practical insights into their real-world implementation in water treatment systems.

Participants will gain hands-on laboratory experience, working on experimental setups aligned with their research interests and learning how to design, operate, and evaluate membrane systems. To ensure high-quality practical sessions and small-group work, registration is limited to 30 participants.

Academic and Industry Perspectives

The course brings together leading academic experts who will cover the fundamental principles of membrane engineering, alongside industry partners who will provide practical viewpoints on technology deployment, innovation pathways, and business opportunities in the membrane sector.

A Collaborative Learning Experience

Beyond technical training, the Summer School offers a unique opportunity to collaborate in teams, share knowledge, and build professional connections with fellow participants, researchers, and industry professionals working in membrane science and technology.
