Sala Montjuïc 2026

Every July, the Santa Eulalia moat at Montjuïc Castle fills with blankets, wine, and films. Sala Montjuïc, Barcelona’s open-air cinema festival, returns for its 24th edition from 10 July to 5 August 2026. For sixteen evenings, the slopes of Sants-Montjuïc become the best place in the city to watch a film.
The festival has been running since 2003, organised by MODIband Cultural Association. Its longevity comes from doing the same things well: films in their original language with Spanish and Catalan subtitles, a live music act before each screening, and a setting that takes care of the rest. The moat at Montjuïc Castle is exceptional on its own. Everything else is a bonus.
The Programme
Sixteen sessions run across the festival, scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through July and into early August. The programme mixes recent releases, classics, and occasional re-releases across all genres; no particular speciality dominates. Doors open at 20:15. A 30-minute live music act begins at 20:45. The film starts at 22:00. Arrive before the music — the acts are worth seeing, and finding your spot in the dark is less enjoyable than it sounds. Sessions typically finish around midnight.
Open-Air Cinema at Montjuïc Castle
After last year’s temporary relocation during conservation works, Sala Montjuïc 2026 returns to the Santa Eulalia moat at Montjuïc Castle. The screen sits at the far end. On three sides, the old stone walls rise. Below and beyond, the city spreads out toward the sea.
Two seating options are available. The grass area costs €9 — bring a blanket or cushion and find a spot on the slope. Sun loungers cost €12 and are considerably more comfortable for a two-hour film. Both areas sell out, often well in advance.
Bring something warm regardless of which you choose. July evenings on Montjuïc are pleasant but cool down once the sun drops. Food and drink are available on-site, however most people arrive with their own: wine, something to eat, a fold-up blanket. There are no age restrictions, and families attend regularly.
Getting There
The castle is at the top of the hill in Sants-Montjuïc, at Carretera de Montjuïc, 66. Take metro L2 or L3 to Paral·lel, then the Telefèric de Montjuïc cable car to the castle. On a summer evening, as the city lights up below the cable car, this is part of the event rather than just the journey to it. Bus 150 from Espanya is the alternative, slower but reliable if the cable car queue is long.
Build in extra time on your first visit. Getting from the metro to your spot in the moat takes longer than the map suggests, particularly when sessions are busy.
Tickets and Planning
All tickets are sold exclusively at salamontjuic.org. There are no walk-up sales at the gate. Sessions sell out, and popular screenings can go quickly after the programme is released. For a specific film or date, book as soon as you know you want to go.
Tickets are €9 for the grass area and €12 for a sun lounger. For an evening that combines live music, open-air cinema, and one of Barcelona’s remarkable outdoor spaces, the price is fair. Prices and booking verified June 2026.
