Festa Major de Sants 2026

There is a standard piece of advice that circulates among people who know Barcelona well: go to Gràcia for the decorated streets, then go to Sants for the same thing without the crowds. This is accurate as far as it goes, but it undersells Sants considerably.
The Festa Major de Sants runs for nine days from 22 to 30 August — beginning the moment the Gràcia festival ends, which has created an unofficial city tradition of moving directly from one to the other. The decorated streets competition is taken as seriously here as it is in Gràcia, and the quality is comparable. The difference is that when Sants opens, the visitors who came for Gràcia have left, and the people who remain are largely Barcelona’s own residents.
The Streets and the Alt Major
Eleven streets and squares compete for the decoration prizes, each funded and built by resident committees working with recycled and handmade materials. The full map and programme publish at festamajordesants.net as the festival approaches.
Running concurrently in the Parc de l’Espanya Industrial is the Alt Major — an Alternative Festa Major organised by the Sants Neighbourhood Assembly with its own concert programme, workshops, and communal activities. The Alt Major has a political edge that the official festival does not: the neighbourhood assembly emerged partly from anti-Franco resistance, and community self-organisation here has a longer history than most visitors realise.
The Parc de l’Espanya Industrial itself sits on the site of the Güell textile factory, one of the industries that defined this neighbourhood in the 19th century. It is a pointed location for a festival with working-class politics.

The patron saint of Sants is Sant Bartomeu, whose feast day is 24 August — the central date of the festival.
Diada Castellera: The human tower competition is among the best of the year. Sants attracts top-tier castellers colles from across Catalonia, and the level of performance is serious. Worth planning your visit around.
Correfoc: Fire run with diables (fire devils) and dragons through the neighbourhood streets on one of the final evenings.

If your trip allows it, spend the last days of Gràcia in Gràcia and the first days of Sants in Sants. The handover from one festival to the other within a few days is one of the better things about a Barcelona August.
