A 50-Year Archive on Screen
The Filmoteca de Catalunya in El Raval opens Feminismes Fílmics: 1976–2026 on 9 July 2026, a free feminist film exhibition in Barcelona that runs through 29 November. The show traces 50 years of Catalan feminist cinema through film fragments, video art, and television reports drawn from the Filmoteca’s own collection.
The starting point is the First Catalan Women’s Days (Primeres Jornades Catalanes de la Dona), held in Barcelona in 1976. It was the first large public feminist gathering in post-Franco Catalonia, attended by around 4,000 women. The debates ran across nine topics: Work, Neighbourhoods, Family, Education, Media, Politics, Legislation, Rurality, and Sexuality. The exhibition uses those nine topics as its structural chapters, tracing how Catalan women’s cinema engaged with each of them across the following five decades.
This is not a linear history of films. The format is a gallery installation built from remontages: curated assemblages of fragments from different decades placed in conversation with each other. The result is less a chronology of individual works than a map of recurring concerns across Catalan feminist filmmaking from 1976 to the present.
What the Exhibition Contains
Each of the nine sections draws on documentary footage, short films, television journalism, and video art from the Filmoteca’s holdings. The material covers both recognised figures in Catalan feminist cinema and less-documented work from activist and community contexts. Because the exhibition rearranges existing material into new configurations, it is possible to encounter well-known films in an unfamiliar frame.
The gallery format means visitors set their own pace. There are no fixed screening times. Because entry is free and the run extends to late November, there is no particular urgency to see everything in one visit. In practice, it is the kind of exhibition that rewards returning to.
Who This Is For
Anyone interested in Catalan cultural history, feminist film history, or the archive as a curatorial form will find this worth the time. However, the exhibition is accessible beyond those specific interests. The nine-chapter structure provides enough context that arriving without prior knowledge of Catalan feminist cinema is not an obstacle.
For visitors to Barcelona with a few hours in the Raval, the combination of a serious free exhibition and the Filmoteca building itself makes this an efficient choice.
The Filmoteca de Catalunya
Filmoteca de Catalunya is the Generalitat de Catalunya’s official film archive, located at Plaça de Salvador Seguí 1–9 in El Raval. Beyond its archive function, it runs a year-round programme of repertory screenings, restorations, and exhibitions that is among the more rigorous of any cinema institution in the city. The building also has a bar and café at ground level, which is a reasonable option before or after a visit.
