Festes de Sant Roc 2026

In 1589, Barcelona was in the grip of plague. The residents of the Gothic Quarter prayed to Sant Roc, the patron saint invoked against epidemic disease, and organised a celebration in his honour. Since then, they have done it every August. The 2026 edition will be the 436th consecutive year.
That continuity is part of what makes the Festes de Sant Roc worth knowing about. This is not a reconstructed tradition or a civic marketing exercise. It is the oldest preserved festa major in Barcelona, held in the same square, with many of the same traditions, for over four centuries.
What Happens
The festival runs for four days centred on Placà Nova, the square immediately in front of Barcelona Cathedral. The programme follows the established pattern of Catalan popular culture: gegants (giant figures) processioning through the Gothic Quarter streets, sardana dances in the square, ball de bastons (stick dance), and a correfoc on the final night.
What distinguishes the Festes de Sant Roc from every other Barcelona festa major are two events you will not find anywhere else.
The first is the cucanya: a competition in which contestants attempt to walk across a greased horizontal pole suspended above the square. It is exactly as undignified as it sounds, which is the point. Obviously, spectators shout advice that is rarely helpful. Almost no one makes it across. Everyone watching has a better time than the person on the pole.
The second is the glops amb el porró llarg: a drinking competition in which wine is poured from an unusually elongated version of the traditional Catalan porró (a glass wine vessel with a long spout) into the mouths of contestants at increasing distances. It has been played in this square for four hundred years. The Generalitat de Catalunya has designated the whole festival Heritage of National Interest, which somehow makes the porró competition funnier.
When and Where
The 2026 edition runs Thursday 13 August to Sunday 16 August. The feast day of Sant Roc is 16 August, always the final day of the festival.
The focal point is Placà Nova, directly in front of the Cathedral of Barcelona. It is one of the city’s most historically layered public spaces: the north edge of the square has visible sections of the original Roman wall, and the Cathedral’s Gothic façade occupies the entire south side. The festival extends into the surrounding streets of the Gothic Quarter for the correfoc on the final night.
Metro: Jaume I (L4, 5 min walk) is the most practical stop. L3 Liceu (7 min walk) also works.
