Foreign Language Learning Strategies Course 2026

About the event

Universitat Pompeu Fabra | Poblenou Campus, Carrer de Roc Boronat, Barcelona, Spain
The registration period is from July 1 to August 5

The course’s main objective is to provide students with the tools they need to independently approach learning their second foreign language (French, German, and LSC). At the same time, it aims to develop receptive and productive skills at the initial level of the Common European Framework of Reference in order to reach the minimum required level (A1+) when beginning language subjects in the Translation and Interpreting and Applied Languages degree programs. It should be clarified that the activity is not a “traditional” language course—if it were, we would recommend that students take the courses offered by UPF Idiomes—but rather a course that is not covered by the existing educational offerings.

Experience has shown us that the information on language proficiency requirements that new students receive during first-year tutorials is not sufficient for them to attain those requirements independently. We therefore believe it is necessary, during an initial phase of in-person teaching/learning, to make them aware of their needs and of the best strategies for beginning and/or continuing language learning in the first term.

With this course, we hope that secondary school students will arrive at their Language and Translation subjects with the minimum essential knowledge needed to successfully tackle the first year of their studies. Furthermore, with regard to LSC, we are certain that there is no equivalent training in our immediate context that our students could take.
