Exhibition: A New Future, a New Hope. The First Steps Towards Democracy (1976–1978)

The exhibition explores the period between 1976 and 1978, key years in the country’s recent history marked by the beginning of the recovery of democratic freedoms following the death of General Franco.

Fifty years ago, the end of the dictatorship ushered in a new era driven by the desire of large sectors of the public to regain rights and freedoms, secure political representation, and build democratic instruments of government. Despite the difficulties and tensions of the time, steps were beginning to be taken towards a new society.

This period was particularly intense and dynamic. Citizens wanted to make their voices heard and participate actively in building the future. Neighborhood movements, advocacy platforms, trade unions, political parties, and cultural and sports associations played a fundamental role in shaping a fairer, more democratic, and more modern society and cities.

In this context, Badalona, because of its socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, is a relevant example for explaining this momentous period. The city was the scene of strong civic mobilization that contributed decisively to laying the foundations of democracy, symbolizing, after many years of oppression, a new future and a new hope.

The exhibition is part of the “Memòria en Xarxa” project, promoted by the Xarxa de Museus Locals of the Diputació de Barcelona, in collaboration with the Memorial Democràtic of the Generalitat de Catalunya, with the aim of preserving, disseminating, and highlighting the country’s democratic memory.
